I had the delight of meeting Marie McKinney-Oates from the Nashville Marriage Studio at a bridal show back in March and learned about what her role in wedding couples lives was. So many people dream of the big day and all that that entails, but they don't consider what the other hundreds, of thousands of days are going to be like with their spouse. I know from experience that is definitely a change, a transition, from unmarried to married.
Marie McKinney-Oates is putting on the Bound Together seminar for engaged couples. Here in Marie's words a description of what this pre-marital counseling seminar will include and how she developed this workshop:
"When I decided to put together a pre-marital education workshop I knew I did not want to just spew statistics and "this is how marriage should be" advice at a couple. First of all, each couple is so unique and has such different definitions on what it means to have a successful marriage that it wouldn't help anyone. What is considered a "success" for one marriage would not be a "success" for another. I really want to respect each couple's "individuality".
"Second, I don't want couples to just receive information. If anything, our culture suffers from information overload! I don't want couples to just learn 'about' healthy marriages, I want them to practice healthy marriages right there in the workshop!
"Keeping these two points in mind, I put together Bound Together, a pre-marital education workshop. Bound Together is split into two sessions. During the first session we focus on personality traits of each partner and how those traits interact. We will do short inventories to assess each partner's personality traits, their preferred love language, their attitude towards money and how they approach conflict. This is a fun activity because partners will learn tons about each other. The first year of marriage can be very trying, and knowing all these little details about each other can make it just a bit easier to navigate.
"The second session is all about practice, practice, practice. Most people don't know how to communicate well or how to fight fair. During this session we try our best to fix that! For two hours couples will not only learn about the various rules of communication, but they will put them into practice. Couples will role play both good and bad communication. This is important because it allows the couple to experience good communication which makes them more likely to actually put into practice when they get home.
"More than anything, the goal of Bound Together is for couples to become as confident in their relationship and as prepared for marriage as possible before their wedding day."
We definitely encourage our couples to take pre-marital counseling, even if your minister doesn't require it or if you're an out of state couple. It is a chance to talk about many of the issues that will arise, especially in your first year of marriage.
Marie is offering our "delightful" readers $20.00 off the total seminar price, $60.00, when you mention that you saw the information on our blog. This will be taking place June 26 & 27th and complete information can be found here. Happy Planning and happy marriages!
